live recordings

At our shows, we mostly play originals, but we do like to mix in a few unique covers, and some traditionals too. Here’s what we’ve been working on lately, so you may hear some of these:

a little about us

~ chamber folk music, based in Southern Maine ~
~ cello, harp, guitar, mandolin, banjo, etc ~
~ fun, fervent, and a little fierce ~

what’s “chamber folk” music anyway? for us, it is folk music played on instruments found most often in classical/chamber music settings. we love our traditional instruments, we love all sorts of traditional and modern folk music, and we especially love defying expectations. we play toe-tappers and heartstring-pullers, as well as a few protest songs and some unique covers and traditionals.

cello, harp, guitar, mandolin, banjo, and some vocals to cure what ails you. a refuge from the chaos of life. a moment of beauty and truth. feeling the feelings and enjoying the ride. decades of experience come together to make musical magic.

influences include the Gillian Welch, Avett Brothers, Ben Folds, Florence + the Machine, The Weepies, Watchhouse, Jesse Welles, Sufjan Stevens, Buddy Miller, The Decemberists, Punch Brothers and many more. covering some obscure favorites and deep cuts, and writing a lot of our own folk, blues, ballads, and more.

Our little flock:

Bob Wiegers (mandolin, octave mandolin, tenor banjo, guitar, vocals)
Bob has been singing and playing music his whole life. He picked up the bass guitar as a teenager and soon after discovered the wonders of the mandolin. Now he especially enjoys playing and writing folk music, and he has won two editions of the Wildwood Studio Songwriting Contest. He’s been in plenty of bands that played “normal” music, but would much rather play something original, unusual, fun, and heartfelt. He’s also a visual artist and creative writer, and in past lives was an IT worker and church pastor. He lives in Saco with his family and 2 adorable dogs. check out a recent profile on Bob in the Saco Bay News here

Nate Williams (cello, vocals)
Nate grew up with a musical family in Arkansas and started playing cello at 11. His influences range from classical composers like Vivaldi and Ravel to artists like Elliott Smith and Chris Thile to heavier bands like Tool and Pantera. A Portland resident, Nate is a proud transplanted Mainer currently working in the beer industry. A huge basketball junkie and proud Razorback fan, Nate’s interests outside of music range from sports to playing Warcraft 3

Evah Hellewell (harp, vocals)
Evah has been playing the harp since high school. They like writing folksy pop songs often with a dry sense of humor. They have played in classical harp ensembles as well as a Florence and the Machine cover band. Though coming to this music with a background in classical studies, they much prefer to dismantle the prescriptivist nature of the formal music world and embrace quirky, imperfect, and original musical endeavors. When they are not bringing glissandos to sparrow, you may find them hobbiting around a local bog, spending quality time with the moss and mycelia, or practicing line dances anywhere music is playing.

Donny Bowman (guitar, mandolin, vocals)
Donny is a quiet guy, but he’s a monster on the guitar, and most other instruments with frets, whether its rock-solid rhythm or sweet, sweet lead runs.

Matthew Burnett (piano)
Matthew was a founding member of sparrow and is a supremely talented pianist and songwriter. While he’s no longer an active member of the band, he remains a good friend and collaborator, so perhaps you’ll see him sit in on a show sometime.
